Mexican citizens need a visa to enter the United States. The B-1/B-2 visitor visa is applied for at the consulate and, once issued, allows stays of limited duration. For those living near the border there is the Border Crossing Card, issued only to Mexican citizens and residents, which works as a B-1/B-2 visa in card form; its validity and conditions differ from those of a visa in a passport. In both cases a valid passport is required and the admission decision belongs to the border officer at the point of entry, who may ask for the purpose of the trip and the accommodation.
